CERAKOTE® coating is applied through a meticulous and multi-step process to ensure maximum durability and effectiveness. Here’s an overview of the application process:

1. Preparation:
– Disassembly: The item to be coated is completely disassembled to ensure that every part can be properly coated.
– Cleaning: All parts are thoroughly cleaned to remove any oils, dirt, and contaminants. This is typically done using a degreaser or an ultrasonic cleaner.

2. Surface Preparation:
This is necessary to create a textured surface for the coating to bond with. This surface profile is crucial for the durability and longevity of the coating.
– Abrasive Blasting/ Hand Sanding: The parts are blasted with an abrasive media, such as aluminum oxide or garnet, to create a rough surface that the coating can adhere to. For delicate items hand sanding and prepping is used. This step is crucial for ensuring proper adhesion of the coating.
– Rinsing and Drying: After blasting, the parts are rinsed to remove any residual abrasive material and then thoroughly dried.

3. Coating Application:
– Mixing: The CERAKOTE® coating is mixed according to the manufacturer’s instructions, often with a hardener.
– Spraying: CERAKOTE® is applied with a commercial-grade HVLP spray gun. Multiple thin coats may be applied to ensure even coverage and to achieve the desired thickness.

4. Curing:
– Air Cure or Oven Cure: Depending on the type of CERAKOTE® used, the parts are either oven-cured (typical), or air-cured. Oven curing involves baking the coated parts at a specific temperature between 150-300F for a set amount of time to ensure the coating fully hardens and bonds to the substrate.
– Cooling: After curing, the parts are allowed to cool down to room temperature.

5. Reassembly:
– Once the parts are fully cured and cooled, they are carefully reassembled. Any necessary adjustments or touch-ups are made at this stage.

6. Inspection:
– The coated item is thoroughly inspected to ensure the coating is even, free of defects, and properly cured. This includes checking for coverage, color consistency, and overall finish quality.

The specific steps and details can vary depending on the type of CERAKOTE® used (e.g., H-Series, Elite Series, or C-Series) and the material being coated. Proper application requires skill and precision to achieve the best results.
